Turin is the undisputed world capital of automotive design and one of the centres of excellence in the international automotive industry: the great Italian production of Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, the design of Giugiaro and Pininfarina, Bertone, the automotive innovation of Centro Ricerche Fiat, the robotic technologies of DEA, Comau and Rambaudi, the innovation of Oxygen (electric alternative mobility), not to mention an enormous satellite activities that serves not only Fiat, but almost all of the major car manufacturers in Europe and the world.

To confirm this today also Chinese design companies choose Turin as European seat. Thanks to this important supply chain, IAAD Transportation design department is flanked by a pool of important partner companies both public and private, which contribute to the activation of research projects, special lectures, workshops and seminars, company visits, educational activities and internships.

Objectives

IAAD have always had the goal of providing an innovative approach to training: the best way to become a professional in transportation is being apprenticed to learn from experts in the field. With this insight, IAAD is the first Italian university of higher education specializing in transportation design.

The design work done in collaboration with IAAD partner companies which allow students to put into practice what they study in an environment very close to what they will encounter in the professional field. IAAD Master courses, thanks to this educational philosophy, are a perfect incubator for tomorrow’s talent, responding directly to the needs and market trends. To train young professionals within the educational programme, IAAD recreates what happens in the professional world. One of the hallmarks of the method IAAD is the constant collaboration with leading companies in the sector for the realization of joint projects. Converging in the projects both the needs of the partner companies and educational goals, creates a situation doubly favourable aspiring designers have the opportunity to work with industry leaders and these ones can monitor future talents to be included in their companies. This system also allows to simulate working conditions in a professional context: working with precise deadlines, correcting the work in progress by following the feedback of the customer, working in teams and goals.

In this process, the teachers are key figures representing the connection between IAAD and industry. All the teachers are professionals in their respective fields of teaching, know the companies in the industry and know what it takes for young designers to be competitive on the market. Students find in Professors a valuable reference to improve and understand what aspects of their professional skills are to be refined to enter as protagonists in the world of work.

During the course a great importance is given to presentations and design contest, students are encouraged to make presentations of their work, supported in participating in national and international contests. Projects must not only meet one designer favour, but must be able to be appreciated and understood by the jury of experts and the public.

The main objective of our master programme is to create appealing professionals for car-makers and design studios, professionals able to make breakthroughs in the transportation industry and set the stage for the future of motor-transportation.

IAAD Master module is truly about design, but not only. We want to prepare students for being active players in the professional contexts they will face once graduated, they must develop a critical sensibility towards the broader issue of the business implications of their ideas and how they relate to a brand image, to the long term goals of a company and to how to target customers. Besides this business awareness of their work, IAAD students must acquire the capability to present themselves and showcase their works in order to demonstrate their skills. The Master Module in Transportation Design is designed to train high level designers who, once finished the studies, can start their own career.

Each edition of the Master involves the development of a thesis project in collaboration with a company. The design process is developed through a first briefing with the company and subsequent meetings of interim presentation and comparison with the designers coming from the partner company, until students get to the final discussion of the thesis. Starting from the brief assigned, the team will develop a 3D model from technical-stylistic input, adopting the same procedures applied in the design center, creating a CAS model with high technical contents.

During the academic year, IAAD organizes educational visits at companies, design centers, museums and exhibitions, special workshops, meetings with designers of particular importance (any costs for travel and entrance fees will be paid by the student). Among the companies clients of the previous editions of the Master of the Department of Transportation Design: Centro Ricerche Fiat, Centro Stile Lancia, Italdesign Giugiaro – Volkswagen Group, Porsche.
